Non-Surgical Spine Specialist
Clinical Nutritionist
Why I Do What I Do In college, I took up martial arts and while I was training, I stepped in some gymnasts’ chalk as I was throwing a kick. I slipped and flew about 5 ft up in the air before landing flat on my sacrum on the wooden gym floor. The pain in my low back was intense and continued to worsen until I was taking 25 Advil just to get through the day. The stronger pain drugs made me sick. I stopped exercising because of the pain and gained 20 lbs. After visiting 3 chiropractors, an orthopedist, a neurologist, a rheumatologist, and a neurosurgeon I always ended up with the same result: “We can’t find anything Physically wrong with you.” Obviously, my pain itself was not enough to convince these physicians that something was indeed seriously wrong.
Fourteen months after the injury my back hurt so much I couldn’t do anything without experiencing pain, keeping me from the activities I loved, and from functioning normally on the most basic level. I then heard about a chiropractor who also used herbal medicine and liver detoxification and decided to go see him. After my initial examination he told me in addition to the ligament injuries sustained in the fall, I had a wheat allergy and mercury poisoning which caused kidney inflammation and hence debilitating muscle spasms. He prescribed a wheat-free diet, a detoxification regimen, and chiropractic manipulative therapy. I was skeptical, but guess what? Two weeks later, the pain had reduced by 50%. Three months after that I was completely pain-free! It was amazing; not only was the pain gone, but I got my life back. I remember thinking, “Wow, if I could ever help people like that, it would be incredible!”
The scientific knowledge necessary to become this type of practitioner was so scary for this English major; but 3 years later I got the courage up to go back to school. It took me 6 years of training to study all the various modalities of alternative medicine I wanted to practice. But they were years well spent as I am able to offer combined chiropractic joint manipulation, clinical nutrition, detoxification, herbal medicine, lifestyle counseling, cranio-sacral therapy, and neuro-muscular therapy to help each patient with their specific, individual needs. I’ve met many patients who have similar stories and helping them decrease their pain, restore function, and get back to what they love in their lives is incredibly rewarding! Each day, after treating a variety of patients with a broad variety of ailments, I’m happy that a “lucky accident” allows me the joy of doing what I do.
Chiropractic Defined:
Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery.
From the Greek, “chiro-practic,” meaning “hand-practice,” chiropractic services focus on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, Doctors of Chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.
